When you think of Mexican cocktails, the Margarita probably comes to mind first. But ask anyone in Mexico what they actually drink — and you’ll likely hear just one name: The Paloma.

🌸 A Simple, Refreshing Classic

The Paloma is everything a cocktail should be — light, citrusy, and incredibly refreshing. It’s made with tequila, grapefruit soda, a splash of lime juice, and a pinch of salt. That’s it. No fancy equipment, no hard-to-find ingredients — just pure, effortless flavor.

Served over ice in a tall glass and garnished with a slice of grapefruit or lime, the Paloma strikes the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and salty.

🇲🇽 The Story Behind the Paloma

While the Margarita became Mexico’s most famous export, the Paloma became Mexico’s everyday favorite.

Its origins trace back to the 1950s in Tequila, Jalisco, where Don Javier Delgado Corona, owner of the iconic La Capilla cantina, is said to have created it. Around the same time, grapefruit soda like Squirt and Jarritos became widely available, and locals began mixing it with tequila for a refreshing, fizzy drink — the Paloma was born.

Its name, meaning “dove” in Spanish, symbolizes peace and simplicity — fitting for a drink that embodies both.

🍊 Why It’s Mexico’s National Cocktail

Unlike the Margarita, which requires orange liqueur and careful shaking, the Paloma is easy, approachable, and quintessentially Mexican. It’s the drink of backyard barbecues, beach picnics, and family celebrations.

The combination of grapefruit and tequila is bright and zesty — a flavor profile that perfectly complements Mexico’s warm climate and vibrant food culture.

Today, the Paloma proudly holds the title of Mexico’s National Cocktail, representing the spirit of the country itself: bold, joyful, and refreshingly real.

The Paloma fits beautifully into Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations.
